Watercolors by Geo. M. Pope

Beaver Bay Point from the Northeast
I paint representational watercolors of the North Shore of Lake Superior.  I hope that my paintings encourage the viewer to reflect upon the beauty surrounding them and reinforce our responsibility of stewardship.

I’ve been painting watercolors since I was 10 years old, after finishing a paint-by-number piece and being fascinated by how the little patches of color made a picture.

Our family moved to Silver Bay, Minnesota in 1958 when the town was brand new. I graduated in 1963, then attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth and the University of Minnesota Medical School.

I’ve spent my career as a physician, with 18 years each in Family Practice and Emergency Medicine. I still work a few days a month.

I have a number of other hobbies, mostly having to do with the outdoors, including phenology, birding, fishing, in-line skating, biking, cross-country skiing, hiking, and sailing. The Superior Hiking Trail and the Silver Bay Marina lured me back to Silver Bay in 2001.

As is true with so many who live on the North Shore, I feel a strong attraction to Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Range. I try to capture the beauty of our area in my paintings, and hope that they foster a sense of respect for the land in the viewer.
